Why Choose A Doula?
Attending a birth is a privilege and a joy. My approach is to respect and support your informed choices; I bring no personal agenda to your birth. I believe this is the most special and spiritual experience that we have in our lives, and you should be treated with warmth, flexibility, openness and professionalism.
I am knowledgeable
You don't have to memorize your prenatal classes. I can suggest comfort measures, positions, movements and other measures to facilitate your labour progression, and provide guidance on when to go to the hospital, or when to call your care provider.
I encourage partner support
I've got your back! I help your partner support you according to his/her comfort level. During long labours, I will make sure your partner gets some rest and nourishment too.
I have experience and perspective
I know you can do it!! When labour gets intense, I will reassure you that your sensations are normal. A calm presence can be the difference, for both mother and partner, between coping and panicking.
Having a Doula lowers the rates of intervention
Studies show that having a doula present reduces the rates of induction, augmentation, caesarean birth, instrumental deliveries, epidurals, narcotic pain relief and maternal emotional distress. In fact, a recent meta-analysis published in February, 2011 in The Cochrane Library looked at 21 randomized controlled studies involving more than 15,000 women. The study found that, compared with women who had no continuous support, women who had a doula were:
• 28% less likely to have a cesarean section
• 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin (i.e. Pitocin) to speed labor
• 9% less likely to use any pain medication
• 34% less like to rate their childbirth experience negatively
